Be proactive and select people that meet these minimums. Donâ€™t get caught reacting to negative headlines or customer complaints. Itâ€™s much easier to make sure you have the Be right person in place and completely avoid negative press.

Can't you just see the ruling now? Judge - "Although the franchisor has proven that the plaintiff does not have the characteristics which are required to be a successful franchisee, I rule in the plaintiff's favor. The defendant has made it abundantly clear that they want to purchase a franchise from the franchisor. Therefore, the defendant (the franchisor) must award a franchise to the plaintiff and take the plaintiff's money."

Remember when you were in school (for me, it was the Stone-Age), and you anxiously awaited your test results from your teacher? Would the paper have a gold star, or riddled with red XXXâ€™s? Some of us are still anxious when doing a test. Weâ€™re always afraid of getting the wrong answer. Afraid of failure. The fear of failure could be the reason that some franchisors are reluctant to use an assessment tool. Why refuse a candidate who has the financial wherewithal and the desire to become a franchisee?

Back in 1988 when I began Dynamic Performance Systems, I would continuously run into franchisors who would accept anyone and everyone into their system, whether the candidate had what it takes to be a franchisee or not. As long as the financials were sound, the words spoken to the candidate were â€œWelcome to the __(insert company name)__ family!â€

She was found in the morning when city pound employees came to start their day. She had been tied to the post out in the cold overnight; her eyes swelled shut from infection. When a dog rescue was notified that a beautiful Golden Retriever was on death row, they immediately came to pick her up. Luckily, I had called the rescue, looking to adopt a dog into my family. When we went to the rescue to see Sunshine, as she was named, she ran to my husband and sat down beside him. He looked up at me and smiled. â€œI guess sheâ€™s coming home with us!â€

When the opportunity arose to interview restaurant employees, I jumped at it. After all, who could explain why restaurants have such high turnover rates more than the people who are leaving a restaurant to go to another one? They gave me insight, not only on what it takes to keep good employees, but also on how hiring a great management team affects your restaurant. In our last blog, I interviewed restaurant employees about inappropriate manager/employee relationships and how it caused high turnover. For this blog, I asked them about the great restaurants they worked in and how this affected staff turnover.
